âSee? Didnât I tell you he wasnât bad for a posh bloke?â Nancy nodded at Daisy across the café table on Friday morning and pushed an oat and raisin cookie towards her. âHe gave my cake Best in Show and anyone with taste that good canât be completely terrible.â
It wasnât an argument Daisy felt would stand up in a court of law but she had to concede Nancy had been right about Kit. âI didnât realize heâs a single parent.â
Her friend nodded. âBut from the sounds of things, heâs better off that way. I donât know the full story but I think Aliceâs mum walked out when she was less than a year old. Left Kit holding the baby while trying to get his flying career off the ground after leaving the RAF.â
Daisy frowned. âLots of women struggle to cope with a newborn baby,â she said doubtfully, thinking back to how hard it had been when the twins were tiny. âI donât think we should judge her without knowing the full story.â
âThatâs true,â Nancy allowed, breaking off a piece of cookie and crunching on it thoughtfully. âBut rumour has it she went straight to the airport, flew to Val-dâIsère for the ski season and never came back.â
Daisy pursed her lips. If that was true then it was harder to understand but plenty of absent fathers had done similar things. Was it any different because it was a mother they were discussing? Perhaps not but it had to have been hard on Kit and Alice. Not that it was any of Daisyâs business, she reminded herself. âAlice seems like a decent kid, in spite of everything,â she said. âFinn and Campbell like her and I do too.â
Nancy fired a sly look across the table. âSpeaking of people you like, I hear you and Drew had a cosy little smooch on Monday evening.â
Immediately, Daisy felt her cheeks turn rosy red. âWhat? No, we didnât. Who told you that?â
âCalm down,â Nancy said, grinning. âIâm not your mum. I think itâs nice that youâre making new friends.â
Daisy fanned her face, willing the blush to subside. âBut we didnât â we werenât kissing or anything. It was just a dance, thatâs all.â
âA slow dance,â Nancy teased. âWhen there wasnât even any music playing.â
Mortified, Daisy took refuge in her cup of tea. Had everyone seen her and Drew dancing? Was the whole village discussing it? âThere really wasnât anything in it.â
Nancy sat back. âThatâs not what Drew told me. He seems to think sparks flew and I donât mean from the bonfire. Heâs keen.â
The trouble was, Daisy couldnât really argue â there had been a moment that felt as though it was just the two of them in the shadows beyond the leaping flames. And that was why sheâd gone out of her way to avoid Drew ever since, dodging out of sight when she saw him heading to the orchard behind the farmhouse and finding something to busy herself with if sheâd spotted him in the cobbled yard.
